Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream Starter Kit – review

I’m not sure why I would’ve thought 15g of moisturizer would’ve been enough for my month long trip to the US considering it was winter. 2 weeks in, I was running out of moisturiser (SK-II Skin Signature) and a light bulb came up – I should go to Kiehl’s. Although my experience with their products has been mostly positive, it wasn’t one of my obsessions hence, I’ve no idea why it was the first thing that came to mind.

I waltzed into the Costa Mesa store and came across this set that was perfect for me. Not only was I running out of moisturizers, I also needed a cleanser and they had to be small and light for me to travel with. It wasn’t entirely a blind buy as I previously tried a sample of the Ultra Facial Moisturizer.

For usd$24.50 which is the RRP price of the 50ml / 1.7oz cream, you get for free a deluxe sample cleanser (50ml / 1.7 oz) and deluxe sample of the toner (50ml /1.7oz)

The cream:

I prefer the cream over the moisturizer. It’s a no frills, light textured and hydrating cream. It actually stung (fades away quickly) when I started using it but I don’t seem to have that problem anymore.

This isn’t going to replace my staple because I need a bit more from my moisturizer but I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for something that’s hydrating, non drugstore and affordable.

What I like about it:

  • It sinks in quickly
  • It doesn’t leave my skin feeling oily
  • Suitable for use during winter and even hot humid weather
  • It glides on easily
  • It keeps my skin hydrated even after a long day
  • It hasn’t caused any breakouts

According to the website:

Our formula is made with Antarcticine–a Glycoprotein extracted from microorganisms sourced from sea glaciers and notable for an ability to protect skin from cold temperatures–as well as Imperata Cylindrica, a plant indigenous to the Australian desert which possesses superb water retention properties in dry conditions. Our unique combination of ingredients helps reduce moisture loss while drawing and absorbing moisture from the air.

The cleanser:

I would say like the cream, this is simple and effective.

It’s formulated with a lot of goodies like Squalane, Apricot Kernel Oil, Vitamin E, and Avocado Oil. The idea is that it will cleanse well without being harsh to your skin. This is exactly the kind of cleanser that I like.

I find cleansing milks, creams and oils to only be effective for removing makeup. Foaming cleansers are a must but they can be very harsh on your skin, something I need to becareful of seeing I’m in my mid-20s.

I was so happy with this that I’ve now purchased the full size version usd$18.50 (150ml / 5.0 oz). L’occitane’s Immortelle Brightening cleansing foam has always been my hero cleanser but I’ve always found it to be a bit too drying so this balances out the task of cleaning without your skin feeling too tight very well.

Over the 2 months cleansing my face twice daily, I’ve only managed to use up half of this.

Some props to Kiehl’s:

I’m so pleased with the service I receive at Kiehl’s every single time. They are never pushy, always happy to answer any questions and generous with samples. I wonder what the service is like at the Malaysian stores. Hopefully similar to how it is in the US and Australia as I hate it when people follow me around.

Speaking of samples, I wish I had a sample of Rosa Artica. I only just came across this and it sounds divine!
